Periodicals:
Letters published at regular intervals. 'Sarth Gujarati Jodnikose' has defined 'Periodical' as 'periodical publication'. In English it is called magazine or 'periodical'. Encyclopaedia Britannica defines a magazine or periodical as a published collection of essays, articles, stories, poetry, etc., while the Columbia Encyclopaedia defines periodicals as publishing about art, literature, or social subjects by relatively lesser-known authors. The publication being written above.

It would be fair to say that print media started with magazines; Because, it was a kind of experimental thing to bring news to the people through such a medium and in the beginning it would have been given in periodical form and not in daily form. In Gujarati language, there is a definite proof of this matter that before the start of daily news paper, news distribution started through magazines. Mumbai Samachar (originally 'Sri Mumbaia Shamachar'), the earliest Gujarati language daily published from Mumbai, was published weekly from 1 July 1822 to 2 January 1832, and became a daily from 3 January 1832. A Parsi nobleman named Fardunji Marzban started a Gujarati printing press in 1812 and 10 years later a magazine in Gujarati language was started which is 184 years old today (in 2006). A periodical called 'The Dial' was published even in English language till 1840.

Types and Sizes of Magazines: In the early years there was not much variety in the types and sizes of magazines. Mainly the news related to literature, art, institution, society or caste was conveyed through periodicals. These periodicals were mainly weekly or monthly. Gradually over its period there was a lot of variation and many types were added. For example, in addition to weekly, fortnightly, fortnightly, monthly, fortnightly, quarterly, six-monthly and annual issues began to be published. Apart from this a number of bi-annual and tri-annual periodicals are also found. Even weeklies are now published in different sizes ranging from demi to tabloid (half the size of a mainstream newspaper).
