Dandi Satyagraha

The Dandi Satyagraha or Dandi March was a non-violent civil disobedience movement led by Mahatma Gandhi against British rule. This struggle, which lasted for 24 days from 12 March to 6 April 1930, started a campaign of direct action through non-violent resistance against the British government's monopoly on salt and taxes imposed on it. Mahatma Gandhi started this satyagraha with 78 of his faithful volunteers.  This march covered a distance of 10 miles per day for 24 days, starting from the Sabarmati Ashram and ending at the coastal village of Dandi near Navsari. Thousands of Indians joined the march on the way. At 6:30 a.m. on 6 April, Gandhi broke the Salt Law, which resulted in a series of non-violent civil disobedience movements across the country.

After the riots in Dandi, Gandhiji proceeded to the southern coast, breaking the salt law and addressing meetings along the way. The Congress party planned to hold a satyagraha at Dharasana, 25 miles south of Dandi, but before the plan could be implemented, Gandhi was arrested at midnight on May 4. The Dandi march and the proposed Dharasana Satyagraha drew world attention to India's freedom struggle through the news media. This non-violent resistance against the Salt Act continued for about a year and culminated with the Second Round Table Conference with Viceroy Irwin following Mahatma Gandhi's release from prison.  Around 60,000 Indians were imprisoned during the Salt Satyagraha. However, This satyagraha failed to secure a major tax remission from the British.
